Does anyone else remember Japan and the Fifth Generation?  It was early
1980's and Japan declared to the world that they intended to develop and
market the Fifth Generation of computers.  They would be artificially
intelligent machines that could reason, draw conclusions and make
judgements.  Intent was supposedly to dominate the computer industry and
to establish a knowledge industry as well.

For those interested in history, the book:  The Fifth Generation:
Artificial Intelligence and Japan's Computer Challenge to the World, by
E.A. Feigenbaum and P. McCorduck documents and discusses.
