it’s no big deal by cherry-picking data, but I think you’d be hard-pressed
to find a large number of

musicians willing to assert they’re doing as well as they ever have.



The musicians I know say that things were never great, and they're not

great now.  One of our local groups, who made vinyl records and toured

in Europe, has long had a poster over the tip jar with a check from

BMI for 2c.



Also, the period that's often cited as "normal" was actually quite

abormal, with sales boosted by CDs replacing vinyl.  Once everyone had

their CDs, sales were going to drop with or without Napster.



I agree that it would be socially desirable to fund music better, but

I don't think that threatening to put the people who listen to that

music in jail is a winning strategy.  I also think, as an author who

has written a lot of books that have been widely pirated, that it is

not society's job to police my copyrights.
