Subject: Re: [IP] New Trump Deportation Rules

We already know what happens to the farm economy, among other sectors, when the migrant, oft undocumented, workforce
is eliminated.

The crops rot unpicked.

This was tried in Georgia and Alabama.

Even in 2016, we were facing a farm labor shortage, some of which was fallout from the Trump/GOP "deport them all"
rhetoric.

Contrary to popular belief, the laborers picking the crops are oft-- not always-- fairly well paid. The farmers
don't hire them primarily to save money, but because the migrant, oft undocumented, workers are actually very good at
the job. And, again, contrary to popular belief, picking crops -- especially fruits -- requires quite a bit of
skill. If you bruise the fruit at all, the value of that fruit can be cut by 80-85% (seriously-- that is the
difference between an apple destined for display in the produce aisle and one destined for apple sauce).

Meat packing and the restaurant industry are impacted in a similar fashion. A "day without Mexicans" is the same
day that just about every fine dining establishment in NY is closed because the kitchen-- the food prep part, not
just the doing the dishes part-- is unstaffed.

And that is the problem with Trump's deportation policies. It completely fails to acknowledge the very real and
critical role that immigrants play in the labor pool while also telling a fictional story their participation as
unskilled, underpaid, workers who are stealing American jobs.
