I've never seen a plan that offered "unlimited data." In every case
where a broadband service has ever been advertised as "unlimited,"
it has meant "unlimited hours of connection time," as compared with
dialup.

Brett's statement above is simply inaccurate.  I know of no true
broadband service anywhere, in the U.S. at least, that charges based
on "connect time" -- and everybody knows that connect time is
not a charging element in conventional broadband services.

It's clear that the term "unlimited" in ISP ads has been referencing
data, as in this Time Warner ad that was current as late as just a
couple of months ago (and may still be):

Trying to claim that an ad like this is referring to connect time
would be delusional.
