The aggregate shared bandwidth of a WiMax cell tower is at most a few 100Mbps. That is SHARED with 100 - 1000 subscribers.
One fiber can easily deliver gigabits and should be deployed in non- shared architectures (or at least not shared till it hits a non- blocking switch)
So WiMax or any wireless tech that is going to be with us in the next 5 - 10 years is not going to deliver the bandwidths needed for the US to be a modern technological country. It can deliver ubiquity, but not be an alternative to wired/fiber services.
