Even if WiMax was economically viable, it (and no commercial  
technology on the horizon due to both today's tech and the spectrum  
policies described by Brett) is not an alternative to fiber except  
where its really economically vialble to lay fiber such as 3rd world  
countries or wide open rural areas)

The aggregate shared bandwidth of a WiMax cell tower is at most a few  
100Mbps. That is SHARED with 100 - 1000 subscribers.

One fiber can easily deliver gigabits and should be deployed in non- 
shared architectures (or at least not shared till it hits a non- 
blocking switch)

So WiMax or any wireless tech that is going to be with us in the next  
5 - 10 years is not going to deliver the bandwidths needed for the US  
to be a modern technological country. It can deliver ubiquity, but not  
be an alternative to wired/fiber services.
