a sad comment sent to me by a IPer and Home Science

As a more depressing comparison: my son spends a good part of each  
year in (mainland) Europe.  He's too young to understand politics, but  
in his own words he prefers it there because it's more "free."  Even  
at 8 he was encouraged to learn welding etc and then to have fun with  
minimal to no supervision...
