I recommend Daniel Dennet's new book, "Breaking the Spell", for a dense, very intelligent discussion of this issue. He advocates studying religion as an evolving natural phenomenon. Sample insight: Unquestioning belief in a god is similar to romantic love and there are evolutionary pressures that favor both.
