the streets of New Orleans, hounded by Tolkien's Nazgul wearing U.S.
military uniforms (it really did read like an escape from Mordor), there's

Get ordinary people together with a few resources and they can do good
stuff.

More predictably depressing, but well done, is this week's New Yorker,
with an elegiac cover -- www.newyorker.com has most of the topical text
