The really ironic part of all this is that 9/11 instantaneously changed the psychology of the "Hijackee." Instead of a passive "hope- to-land-in-Havana" mentality, many people have an active "rip-hijackers-to-shreds-using- fingernails" stance.

There have been nearly zero hijackings since, so all the added hassle and shoe and nailclipper removal may be a very expensive placebo. We could almost take down the metal detectors at this point in history and rely on passengers to secure their own planes.
