Personal request from IPers down under and Europe

My wife and I are thinking of a holiday trip overseas. We would plan  
early December to sometime arround New Years. We are thinking of ,  
for example, Perth, Christchurch, Berlin, Stockholm/Helsinki.

The question include whether there is any tourist like activities  
during the holiday season or is it limited to family gatherings? Are  
the cities very crowded ? and anything else that would help us decide.
