Jeff Jarvis (http://www.buzzmachine.com) spoke about this at David Isenberg's Freedom to Connect event last spring and how the campaign for decency on TV was basically orchestrated from a point source. As Lauren pointed out, there are very good reasons to oppose .XXX but this is a very strange warping of reality. The idea that .XXX makes sense at all is based on the notion that there obscenity (or whatever characteristic you
refer to) is an intrinsic property of some bits. I would presume that the reason that the administration opposes .XXX isthat they believe in the idea so much they are afraid it will work whereas
many of us on this list oppose it because it can't work. .XXX, Schiavo, evolution, gays, boogie men ... Fear as strategy. -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 13:33 To: Ip IpSubject: [IP] more on Bush administration asks for halt to .xxx domain [fs]

"The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children," Gallagher said in a letter that was made public on Monday.
I have to wonder if that is 6,000 ( letters + e-mails ) from 6,000 different people or if there is a "click here to send an e-mail" button sitting on the same web page that spawned all the FCC complaints last year.
