Not sure if anyone mentioned this, and you probably know it anyway, but nmap
has version scanning since version 3.40.
The version scan is pretty good at identifying services known to nmap.
(Though be careful scanning printers, paper waste can follow)

Thanks to everyone who responded, also in private. I did just 
want to point out that I do not have access to the system (I 
am working on nmap data, basically). Otherwise any of the 
well-known tools you pointed out would have worked :)

I did try to connect to the ports, but couldn't figure out 
anything of use. The suggestions about peer to peer file 
exchange tools seem the most probable however. I will check 
it ASAP. Thanks to everyone for the input !
