Alot of talk about which distro to use. Been running a honeynet for about 1.5 years now and here is my take. Gentoo Used it for a workstation for nearly a year at work. It worked well. IMO it is not well suited for honeynet use. Recovering from a compromise seemed to be too much of a hassle. It is nice to custom build everything from source. That can also be a hindrance when rebuilding a system.
There's a quick way to not have the hassle. Build binary packages when you're building the system (emerge -b), then it takes almost no time to install again. Just back up the packages and your world file (/var/cache/edb/world), and it's almost automatic. -- Bill Weiss Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety. Nor, are they likely to end up with either. -- Benjamin Franklin
