Re: But Facebook are not spammers

if the system provides a prominent one-click "spam
your friends" button, enough people will push it
that you'll get enough new members that you can claim
fantastic growth, hopefully long enough to get some
VC funding and feel rich for awhile before the
hype-cycle runs down?

I got a nice laugh out of that, thanks. I agree this is exactly the case
for the vast majority of these implementations. I can't get into the
details of their business model, but the client I'm consulting with at
present is in a unique position. The people using the system can't use
e-mail directly and other means of communications are either prohibitively
expensive, very slow, or unavailable. The target users may, however, know
their friend's e-mail address to invite them to connect through this
application. Under those circumstances, I'm sure one can understand that a
feature like this might be necessary. We'd like to implement it in a
responsible manner, so I've been fascinated with this discussion.
