The beeb's relationship with the government is a bit more complex than "state-run". Its news coverage does tend to be exaggeratedly anti-government. You could argue that part of its role is be a "safe" channel for dissent, but that would be cynical. :) I had a lot more respect for BBC news before I had television and stopped listening to the world service, though it's generally my news channel of choice. Some of its news/issues programmes are as fluffy as anyone's, and have a very restricted view of both "world" and "news" with far too much "celebrity" and "reality show" content. Grump, grump... I haven't looked at Al-Jazeera for a good while: when I did, it was better than I'd expected. -- David Harley BA CISSP FBCS CITP Director of Malware Intelligence, ESET

They have the bestworldwidecoverage, because they have more correspondents in moreplaces, due toaffiliation with the various former empire countries state media. While I can't take FOX more seriously as a news outlet than most others - at least not on their own claim as anything resembling "fair and balanced" (Fiercely Biased, perhaps), I agree entirely on the Beeb. Best. News. Evah. It bugs me 'cause I don't like state-run media in the least, but the Beeb really does put out a great stream of journalism and information. I like what I see of Al-Jazeera, which so far has been very little. At first just the name made me flinch but I've caught a couple bits from them and while I reserve judgement they strike me as a scrappy organization at least trying to report things as they see them. Better than the big three US cable clown networks, not that that's saying much. -chris _______________________________________________ Fun and Misc security discussion for OT posts. https://linuxbox.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/funsec Note: funsec is a public and open mailing list.
