To me, at least, this is blindingly clear: They crossed the line.
No argument from me there.
I'm sure most or all of us have dealt with spambots at some point; testing and analysis should never allow the spam to actually get out...
I don't think testing and analysis had much to do with it: the programme hasn't been shown yet, but what I've seen suggests a simple demonstration aimed at Dick and Jane. Nothing wrong with that in principle: if they'd done it on a closed network using their own machines, I might even have applauded. To be fair, I don't think this was spam according to any useful definition: it was mail from the BBC to the BBC. It was the distribution mechanism that I have a problem with.
I think it's shameful.
