Re: has Georgia lied?

The media coverage actually made it look like the Russian military
machine is top notch to make the picture even scarier. In reality it's
not the case. Their core is based on the technology from the late 80s
and early 90s. They do have a few types of next gen weapons, but they
are not really deployed throughout the military. They lack high tech
recon and precision strike weapons that helped the US crush Iraqi
forces. The fact that even with the numbers they had they couldn't
really overtake the Georgian positions allowing them to retreat and
then come right back into South Ossetia shows how their military is
still in the past. Yes, the terrain is a factor, but it still shows
that their army is a manpower oriented low tech army. They are a "paper
tiger" (in terms of conventional military forces), which just happened
to take on a "paper duck".

Hi Kyle and all of the folks,
I agree with you in most of the story but it's one thing I'd like to add.
Personally I seriously doubt that Saakashvili would do a thing without a
US command. And speaking of his hopes for a military help of NATO and US -
well I suppose it's obvious right from the beginning that neither NATO nor
US would start such kind of an assault which would be a WW3 opening no
doubt.
On the other hand, it was really a nice chance for United States along
with Nato to see what's Russia is all about on the military frontier, and
would Russia dare to answer Saakashvili in his way of solving problems...
I personally suppose that US along with NATO military analytics got work
for a couple of upcoming years during theese days.

If it goes about Estonia and others...I may add only a couple of things -
it's not a russian hating country around here, not at all, it's an
inadequate government and especially the heads of it: they somehow always
try to find answers to their never ending problems in Russia and russians,
theese are people unable to think logically the only thing driving them is
some sort of anger on Russia and russians around here. People here mostly
are friendly and do not care if you'r a russian, estonian, finnish or
someone else. Who cares eventually ? Do you, for example, care if your
friend or colleague is Spanish or Italian ? Same story here. Yes, there
are people here who think that russians are the cause for them being so
miserable, that russians, afroamericans, turks or arabs are in charge of
them washing dishes in a tiny bar in the subourbs, or it's russians who
are in charge that wives and children don't want to know them. But I
personally think that all the countries have such people, and I'm pretty
much concerned that Estonia doesn't have them more or less than Spain for
example. It's just only one thing - it's a shame if your president is
among them. And it's realy a shame.
But if it concerns being assaulted - theese people are miserable and
afraid on everything, they can of course beat women and children but they
will never assault a man. Of course if it's less than 10 of them against 1
:)
Actually Estonian president is the only thing I feel ashamed about as an
Estonian citizen.

just as a matter of commenting :)

regards,
Viktor
