They sure did. Their media campaign was brutal and very effective at
twisting facts and spreading misinformation. It was one of the few
tools they had to rely on given the military force mismatch. Their
initial assumption about the western military support didn't work.
When they declared themselves our (US) ally and sent their troops to
Iraq they thought it guaranteed them military support from the US and
other NATO countries, but it didn't. Their only choice was to create a
media picture of how a young freedom loving democracy is being
destroyed by a big scary monster to rally international support, so it
could result in a military intervention. Even though the media
campaign was very effective especially here in the US where the
Georgian president's words would spread like fire across all major
media in the end it didn't have the desired effect. They managed to
rally only the Russia hating countries of Poland, Estonia, and Ukraine
(where in certain parts of their countries you'll be verbally abused
and even physically assaulted by simply speaking Russian language).
The western countries simply realized that it just wasn't worth to
start a World War 3 because Georia decided to borrow Serbia's playbook
on Kosovo. What's surprising is that even with this pro-Georgia
coverage here in the States quite a few Americans managed to see that
something just isn't right in that picture. Now... even though the
conflict is winding down the Georgian media campaign is far from over.
It's going into phase 2. Now that a number of radical groups of white
and Russian speaking people are arriving from Poland, Estonia, and
Ukraine they'll start staging Russian atrocities by dressing them in
Russian uniforms and doing god knows what and then conveniently having
media near by to document all that and then report it to the world.
This is not something from a movie... It's a pretty effective tactic
that's been used throughout history and we'll see it again...
literally.

I don't agree with the article on the winner number one. It might be
more true in Europe, but here the story about the genocide against
South Ossetian people is heavily downplayed. The official statements
from our government shift the focus to other areas because they don't
want South Ossetia to be looked at as Kosovo. The president says that
"the response was disproportional", which means that there was a
legitimate reason to act, but Russia went too far. And then Rice goes
further implying that response wasn't even to protect South Ossetian
people, but it was to overthrow the Georgian government because to her
it didn't make sense why Russians would go after targets that are not
physically located withing South Ossetia (anybody who knows something
about military tactics or war in general knows that you don't just
block a punch and then do nothing assuming that the enemy will give
up; remember how Israel was shelled by rockets from Lebanon... the
attackers didn't even need to be located within Israel to attack
Israel; did Israel try to overthrow Lebanon's government when they
went after their attackers...).

Either way, the story is not over and we'll hear and see a lot in the
coming days and months. Not all of it will be true, but it never is...
no matter who is involved.
