Well, it was a long time ago. But I guess the usual reasons in my case:
susceptibility to peer pressure, wanting to appear older and somehow more
sophisticated than I was, an unresolved urge to get comfort from sucking,
something to do with my hands when I was nervous (i.e. most of the time). A
particularly antisocial, unhealthy and expensive way to deal with neurotic
manifestations, in fact. Fortunately, I've picked up a few alternative (less
in-your-face and up-your-nostrils) strategies over the years. :)
