I once spent an afternoon trying to craft an unkillable process...

You've got a point. I'm sure far more damage has been done to innocent
third parties by "researchers" writing exploit code for vulnerabilities
than by virus researchers. 

So why is writing test viruses never excusable but exploit writers are
somehow doing the industry a service?
