BTW is there a software server implementation that does not require

SecureID's algorithm, while published by 3rd parties, is proprietary;
however, there are X9.9 token implementations (I believe freeradius,
already referenced, has such a module). If used in synchronous mode (no
challenge), X9.9 token-based auth offers roughly the same sort of security
as the SecureIDs. Cryptocard and some others make X9.9-based tokens that
3rd party (and free) X9.9/RADIUS systems support.
