T, The biggest problems are with managing compartmentalization of data--not sharing, or being able to share without literally destroying sources--and with managing accuracy of data. Think about keeping personal secrets, and how someone with a secret will know who leaked a secret if they only told one person. You have to control who knows the sensitive stuff. Another big problem is maintaining integrity of data--keeping low quality information from mixing with high-quality data. Think about all of the wrong information that you can get, like gossip, newsgroups, wherever--and how hard it can be to tell the truth in the gossip from the pure fabrications. A fancy computer will just get you the wrong answer to fourteen significant digits if you haven't figured out the policy and procedure stuff that leads to data in your system. I don't work in that field, but have read enough about the problems... Hi All, Maybe of topic for this list but here goes... I can't help think that the problem that the gov't has with intelligence is basically similar to those faced when trying to relate the numerous amounts of data accumulated on larger networks. I am not sure of any ongoing research but I would guess that some of the more advanced technology like neural nets as well as basic modeling could offer great promise not only in point devices like IDS's but also in backend correlation devices. I am not sure why all the current tech hasn't moved in a more advanced direction, maybe some has, some has and failed, some other factors limit the use of advanced logic in these programs. Just curious on whether the security product out there today will ever leverage the technology as it exists and as it will be developed by the Office of Homeland Security or other.
