For example from my pc which is a private IP address (198.162.x.x) I can ping www.yahoo.com or from the router which has a routing address I can also ping www.yahoo.com...the other thing is that I really do not have an ip address for the mail server....makes a difference?

to or through?  ping from where to where by name?  the error message
that caught my eye was:

Of course, this is not the most precise error message found.

As I and others have said, instrument your router to determine what
other protocols are being tried and failing.
