These sort of issues are why we use Linux for all of our firewalls. We
will never have to worry about terminated products and we can run it on
pretty much any platform we deem most suitable for the job (PC, PPC,
Sparc, Alpha, Mips, the list goes on). I consider security too important
to leave in the hands of another company who must necessarily put its own
interests before mine. Linux, iptables (and perhaps a GUI like fwbuilder
(www.fwbuilder.org) for those who need it) make for an awesome
combination. Just recently I set up a redundant Linux firewall using
heartbeat and mon. It works perfectly. If one of the firewalls goes down
or even if the switch port that one of the firewalls is plugged into fails
(and we've had a few failed gigabit switch ports lately even on Cisco
gear) it fails over to the other one. Nobody else can provide all of these
features.
