if you're going to use the mail method, you should probably protect the
integrity of the data by using something like the TLS extension to ESMTP,
defined in RFC 2487. this is supported in most mail systems, ie sendmail,
postfix, exchange ...

this will provide authentication and integrity checking, along with
confidentiality. all the good stuff you would want for your backup
strategies.
