Encryption in WAN links ?

I would like to do a survey here on how many companies enforce
encryption on WAN links in their security policy ? 

I will be trying to convince my management on this aspect but I think it
will be overwritten on the reasoning of performance impact. Any comments
on this would be deeply appreciated.
