Peter,

A month or two ago, I collected a list of possible products suggested by
members of this list. I make no recommendations for any of them, but they
provide a place to start looking. I kind of fancied the atguard thing
(didn't experiment heavily though), but symantec bought it, so no telling
now.

Updates to list:
---gibson research www.grc.com (web based security hole scanner, doesn't
really belong, but I'll give in to enthusiasm)
---netopia 7100 dsl router
---www.sustworks.com Mac firewall/routing?
---Dlink ISDN router with filter --
http://www.dlink.com/products/routers/di300mw/
---www.sygate.com (syshield for under $40?)
---IB2Lan from Nexland (NAT type device?)
http://www.isb100.com/html/isb2l.html (currently site does not come up)

Previous entries:
---Gnatbox (www.gnatbox.com) (appears to be a free version in gnatbox lite
or gblite)
---Black Ice Defender (http://www.networkice.com/Products/BlackICE/)
---SyShield (desktop version of Sygate?) (www.sygate.com)
---AtGuard (www.atguard.com) [Symantec bought this product from WRQ, and has
done something with it -- I believe they may even be selling it now. see
www.symantec.com]
-Collection of small portblocking/detection security apps [not recommended]
(i.e. BOF, Nukenabber, etc.)
Hardware NAT/Modem sharing (something by 3com? More expensive, $200 - $300
range)
        ---3com
        ---Umax Ugate 3000
        ---DSL Router with filter? DLink?
---Cisco DSL 675 modem (suspect this device might have many more
filtering features, in use by USWest?)

Subject: Win98 SE Firewall?

I just got a copy of the memo: Help, someone hacked into my home
computer!

It identifies a problem but offers no solutions. From your e-mail
address I assume you have a solution or two to suggest. Given a home
Microsoft LAN with 4 PCs connected to a hub (via RJ45 cables) and one
system dedicated to being the communications server (P120).
This server
has a second PCS ethernet card for the cable modem. What freeware or
shareware firewall can you recommend to keep snoopers out?

Many thanks for any advice,

Peter Vincent
