If I have VPN, would it overcome the problem of clear text?
Yes, and in the case of a VPN you wouldn't have to open a port to the SQL server. You would connect to the VPN server which most likely resides inside the firewall and then it is as if you are on the local network. The SQL server need not be at all visible to the outside world. On a related note, could the ODBC connection be done over ssh? I imagine it would take some setting up on the server but it has to be possible. Sean
