X.400 application proxy

I think this issue has come up before but I need to readdress it for an
intranet solution.

Setting aside the standard packet filter vs. proxy debate, I need to focus
on X.400 and X.500 protocols.
Is there a reasonable need to pass X.400 traffic through an application
proxy?
Passing via filter/plug/GSP is relatively simple, but does it provide
sufficient cover?

Anyone got success stories on implementing a non-DMS X.400 application
proxy?
