Yeah - actually, I had used VMWare View (it's predecessor, actually) in a previous life and it was pretty much a pain
even then.....

We went with VMware View to support a specific application that securing
would have otherwise destroyed desktop functionality, so we moved it to
VMware View. We have not been moving towards a thin-client environment
anywhere yet, but there are some future plans to do so in one division,
also using VMware View. We felt VMware View was advantagous since it
allowed for each "desktop" to be a different OS version, or run
different versions of specific software, such as IE. However, I found
there were a lot of "gotchas" in View that make configuring and
maintaining it somewhat of a pain. The division that's planning to use
view is creating a specific VM for each user, so they're really not
using some of the advanced features of VMware View that I found
difficult to utilize.

IMHO, if you don't need that desktop-level virtualization to support
specialized apps, you probably don't want to use VMware View.

Hi Folks....

Anyone out there using Citrix and thin-clients (or diskless
workstations) in your academic computer labs and/or classrooms?.....or
in administrative registration/admissions areas? I'm looking at the
different vendor offerings (like VMWare View, and Microsofts new MED-V
and App-V), and keep coming back to Citrix/Xendesktop. What are you
folks using in the VDI realm??

Thanks,

Michael
