PGP desktop trial comes with a very nice secure trashcan "PGP Shredder" and includes the function to securely delete what is in the trash as well as overwrite slack space. A short term (30 day limited) version of the PGP file and drive encryption program is downloadable, see link below, and notably when the encryption expires the eraser/shredder utility continues to work well. I have not investigated the licensing implications of continuing to use the PGP Shredder beyond noting that the website says "After the 30-day trial, the resulting functionality is licensed on a Perpetual basis solely for personal, non-commercial purposes. Any attempt to disable these limitations or modify the software is illegal and prohibited by law." It works well for me on my personal home machine and my laptop where I purchased the desktop license. http://www.pgp.com/downloads/desktoptrial/desktoptrial2.html Mike -----Original Message----- From: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Sweeny, Jonny Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 8:14 AM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: Re: [SECURITY] "Secure Delete" for Windows? SDelete is another option -- though probably not what you're looking for because I think it is only command line; and it deletes files rather than securely emptying out the recycle bin. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897443.aspx -- ~Jonny Sweeny, GSEC, GCWN, GCIH, GWAS, SSP-CNSA Incident Response Manager, Lead Security Analyst Office of the VP for Information Technology, Indiana University PGP key & S/MIME cert: http://informationpolicy.iu.edu/jsweeny jsweeny () iu edu - phone: (812)855-4194 - fax: (812)856-1011 -----Original Message----- From: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Allison Dolan Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2009 14:32 To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: [SECURITY] "Secure Delete" for Windows? The Mac has 'Secure Empty Trash' which securely deletes/"shreds" the files in the trash can. What you have found for the PC that is functionally similar, is easy to install/use, and is free or low cost? Allison F.
