We've had great success with GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/)
unless the hard drive is physically damaged.

Depending on how bad it is you could try some of the recovery tools in 
Knoppix STD or Helix.  I had a 20 gig fat 32 partition that was 
corrupted by Partition Magic during a resize.  I was able to use Knoppix

STD to rebuild the file allocation table and recover the data.  Did the 
same for a friend and now he thinks I walk on water. :-)
