cooperative in good ways. They do not directly compete, but serve
different purposes while sharing many of the same members.

Also, in terms of getting yourself more widely known among security
folks, you might consider attending conferences and training sessions
where others congregate.  A good, relatively low-cost choice is
Educause's Security Professionals Conference.  Next year's event is in
early May in Arlington, VA.  Security-related SANS conferences and
courses are also good places to meet and network with others.  They're
not nearly as low-priced as the SPC, but SANS-EDU events are heavily
discounted and are being offered more and more.
