The Chronicle of Higher Education is sponsoring a live, online discussion on the growing student movement to have colleges stop identifying them by their Social Security numbers, which are in numerous databases, on Thursday, August 1, at 1 p.m., U.S. Eastern time. The guest for the discussion will be Michael A. Corn, associate director of the University of Illinois system's Office for Planning and Budgeting. Mr. Corn helped the university carry out a plan to change the way it uses Social Security numbers. The Chronicle invites members of this list to read an article about this issue, to join the chat with Mr. Corn, and to post questions and comments for him to reply to (advance questions are encouraged and may be posted now) at: http://chronicle.com/colloquylive/2002/08/social/chat.php3 A transcript of the discussion will be posted at this URL when the chat is over.
