If you look in the EULAs of these things you'll find that you'll have just as much of a warranty as you do with your average OSS equivalent (i.e. - none). As an example, I've recently been working on a highly popular, highly expensive CRM that quite frankly, is little more than a fancy frontend to an ODBC connection. How these people stay in business is absolutely shocking, but like you say, the people who buy this have absolutely no idea what they're letting themselves into before it's too late.

IMHO the managment people empowered to make a buy decision, simply don't know anything about the details. So their decision is based on heresay (marketing/advertising/friends with stock of near obsolete hardware).

Any failure of the project is a NEW project to gain rating points...
