was "timestamped".  This could then be kept in a safe place until such
time as the material was called into dispute, at which time a
solicitor could open it, and it could then be used as evidence.

After the Berne Convention removed the need to register a work for it to be 
copyrighted, all that was needed was proof of authorship.  Certified mail 
became the typical way to show authorship at a particular date.
