Yes... Telnetd will be running on port 23 by default...By mentioning
telnet on 25 you are actually connecting to smtpd and the greet
message and prompts are from the smtpd server...where you can use smtp
commands to send a mail to a recipient ...
Just have a look at this ... its connecting to the google's smtpd server :)

220 smtp.google.com ESMTP
