Password strength on UNIX

Hi list,

Is there a means to audit/check the strength of passwords on UNIX machines
with a native unix utility? If not, would you recommend utilities such as
john the ripper or crack? Finally, in this case, any special considerations
I should be aware of (account lockouts, system performance...)?
