I have never heard of different AV engines sharing the same signature files. Each vendor develops their own virus definitions. No vendor can always be the fastest in developing a signature to detect a new virus every single time. That is why you want to use multiple AV engines in the first place. Look through the Securityfocus mailing list archive. I believe someone posted a link documenting various AV vendors' response time to the most famous virus outbreaks. You will note that different vendors had different response times for each outbreak. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This list is sponsored by: ByteCrusher Detect Malicious Web Content and Exploits in Real-Time. Anti-Virus engines can't detect unknown or new threats. LinkScanner can. Web surfing just became a whole lot safer. http://www.explabs.com/staging/promotions/xern_lspro.asp?loc=sfmaildetect ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
