If you will be working with VMWare, they have a free converter called 'P2V' (physical to virtual?):
http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

Other than that, you can look into simple tools like 'DD' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd_(Unix) to perform data dumps between partitions, disks, or even over the network using 'NC' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netcat to perform forensics.

Also, look at Penguin Sleuth & Autopsy http://www.linux-forensics.com/, they even have a VMWare Virtual Appliance http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/249

Hello Folks,
Do you have any experience converting physical machines into Virtual machines to be used with Microsoft Virtual PC or even
VMWare?
I'd like to do this with client desktops or even servers that where hacked or must be checked, forensics, I mean. Thanks, Antonio
