Is you are in the US, contact your state's dept of environmental protection. They have the geologist that create these 
maps. Also, you could try FEMA.

As to major environmental hazards, the US Geologic Survey and NOAA have authoritative information. However, there is 
still much unknown, therefore, considerable risk arising from that fact.  Local authorities should be able to provide 
maps regarding flood plains and other material of interest to zoning/community planners and the construction industry.
