There might be numerous password crackers, but the techniques they use
are similar. In fact they can be divided into few categories:

1) Brute-force (offline/online)
2) Dictionary (offline/online)
3) Xieve (ignores non-sense combinations)
4) hybrid
5) rainbow tables
6) precomputation of hashes
