What is the comman you're running.

I typically use:

nmap -sT -v -v -P0 -O [hostname/ip/iprange]

-sT - TCP connect
-v -v  - verbose output (2x for more info)
-P0 - in case host in not responding to pings
-O - guess the OS...sometimes works especailly well for networking equipment

This info can all be found just by running the nmap command.  If you're 
refering to a GUI version of nmap, ditch it!  Command line is the way to go: 
http://download.insecure.org/nmap/dist/nmap-3.81-win32.zip
