I would start with Nessus (download from http://www.nessus.org/ install
and run a scan on your system/s) which will provide a pretty good view
of your system. If you feel you need more testing , try the nice little
apps here: http://www.packetstormsecurity.org/misc/group/

where can i learn about basic exploits and how to deploy them? im going
to be pen testing a new WAN and my supervisor has no clue what shes
