Reality is that neither really show the level of knowledge an individual has. I've run into countless individuals who have certifications but really don't have any basic knowledge. A perfect example is an individual I know that has a few Cisco certs but wasn't quite sure what telnet was. I've seen similar grads. IMHO, nothing beats some solid experience. However, hiring managers may not think the same way. Usually, the degree or cert is an easy way to get an interview as it's usually the first thing they look for. Consulting companies will require certs so that they can more easily justify what they charge for your services. So really, there is value on both sides. The best scenario would be a few highly regarded certs and some solid experience. You need to ask yourself what you would gain by having either. If you obtained a CISSP, would your current employer raise your salary? Would you be able to get a better, higher paying position with it? If not, don't bother. soumyadipta_das () yahoo com wrote:
Is it better (in terms of technology and industry acceptablity) to get a university degree on information security than certifications such as
ccna/ccsp, ceh (or security+) and cissp?
