On a university network
Our network is a shared resource. The core principle of our campus Acceptable Use Policy is that no individual or even department is permitted to do things which threaten the delivery of that resource to the rest of the campus. Our IT team has worked with several instructors to provide ways to isolate specific labs from the rest of the network during classes where unusual traffic -- including not just pen-testing, but also things like SNMP -- may be flying around. Accidents happen. Dave Gillett
