Internet -> My Email Appliance -> Firewall -> Exchange Server

Sendmail is ok. Postfix is really a lot better than sendmail. Most of
the solutions - such as the one I have listed above - are probably
overkill for you. These solutions filter spam, clean up HTML, clean up
virii, etc. Believe me, if you are asking "how do I protect the
Exchange server" you're in for a long night with these solutions, even
if they are superior.

If you just want a mail gateway then maybe something like Obtuse's SMTPD
is probably your baby. I used this for 2-3 years before the spam just
got too awful with almost no problems. Set it and forget, and setting
doesn't take too long. FYI if you use this the trick to forwarding mail
is /etc/mail/ files such as transport ;-) http://sd.inodes.org/
