I'm coming in half way through this conversation, so apologies if this obviously won't work for your scenario: you could run an OS detect nmap scan against a list of IP addresses. I'm not entirely sure of the correct syntax, but the /? option will give you plenty of info. there's a release for 98, 2000, most linux brands, etc nmap's site is www.insecure.org
