http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/guides.html

the above URL contains some guides on several aspects of Linux. Somewhere in
the middle of the page you will find

Securing & Optimizing Linux: The Ultimate Solution

It used to be a guide specific for RH systems but anyway it is a good
starter. It reffers generally to Linux distros and how to minimise -
optimise them.

The ultimate solution to your "problem" IMO is to build a Linux From Scratch
system. www.linuxfromscratch.org

This is the way to build a purely custom system, secure and minimal (and
also get "educated" on Linux issues. Minimising an installation is not an
easy task :-) )

I'd be intrested to get some feedback about what viewers of this list
believe on security and other issues involved in a LFS system.

Subject: Good Red Hat install

Hey all,

I am trying to create a somewhat 'standard' install that I can use for
Red Hat. The main purpose for this box would to do scans (i.e. nmap) and
maybe packet generation to test our firewall. Now I don't have a lot of
Linux experience, but I want to install the minimal possible. The test
machine that I am using is an old p 233Mhz - so in other words the first
thing gone is the gui. Can anyone point me to some HOWTO or something like
that? Thanks

Matt
