validating vulnerability on the network

Hello all, can someone help me out. I'm looking to find information on how
to validate that a vulnerability was taken care in a mixed environment. I
know there are vulnerability scanners and patch scanners that are free or
someone can purchase. But does someone know of a way to check the version of
a given DLL or Executable. What do you all do to validate that a
vulnerability was corrected.
